Bittorrent Guide

BitTorrent is the name of a peer-to-peer (P2P) file distribution system created by programmer Bram Cohen. BitTorrent is designed to distribute large amounts of data widely without incurring the corresponding consumption in costly server and bandwidth resources. BitTorrent traffic accounts for ~35% of all traffic on the Internet.

BitTorrent clients are programs which implement the BitTorrent protocol. Each BitTorrent client is capable of preparing, requesting, and transmitting any type of computer file over a network using the BitTorrent protocol. This includes text, audio, video, encrypted content, and other types of digital information.

Why should you care? Because you can use BT to download anime! Here’s how to do it safely:

Software you need to have running before you can start torrenting:

  • Symantec Anti-Virus can be downloaded for free from ECU Onestop under Tools >> Software Downloads.
  • Microsoft Defender is a free (if you run a legal copy of Windows), realtime, spyware scanner.
  • PeerGuardian is free personal firewall software specifically designed to protect BT users from baddies.

How to torrent:

First you need to get a BT client, I recommend uTorrent.

If you have a newer version of Windows XP (SP2) you will need to use LVLlord’s Patcher to allow BT to run well.

After you install a client you will need to do two things to make it safe. Change the port it uses to some random value between 2500 and 32000 and limit your upload speed to around 30 to 50 K. Doing these two things should help you avoid any imperial entanglements. Refer to your client’s documentation to find out how to do this, in uTorrent it’s easy.

When you find something you want to download you will use the client software to open it’s .torrent file. Then the BT client will begin downloading the file for you. Some good placed to find anime related torrents are:

Happy torrenting kiddies. If you have any question please post them below and I’ll do my best to answer.

  1. How long does it usually take to download a file? I have been downloading something for half an hour, and it hasn’t gained 1% yet. >_

  2. Makoto - It depends on the number of seeders, the more seeders the faster the torrent will download. Try to look for well seeded torrents. Sometimes incresing your upload speed will help as well.
